Have Your Say About the Power Outages

In the wake of the power outages in late June and early July, the Maryland Public Service Commission is inviting the public to share their experiences and opinions of the performance of the state’s power-providing utilities. The hearing focusing on the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) will take place August 14th in the War Memorial Building.

Citizens who want to speak up about their experiences with the June 29th “derecho” storm and related outages must first sign up at a table outside the hearing room.

BGE completed restoring the 748,000-plus outages from the storm by July 7, according to the company’s website. BGE says the storm was “one of the most damaging in [the company's] nearly 200-year history.”

The Sun reports that BGE struggled to gather the necessary manpower to deal with the storm’s aftermath, and the average customer’s power loss lasted 38 hours. The outages  have spurred both criticisms of BGE’s response methods and ongoing suggestions for service improvements.
