The website, Nextdoor.com, has brought a new brand of social networking to the web. It is a private social networking service that allows you to connect only with people who live in your geographic vicinity, a trend known as online neighborhood networking. Although co-founder Nirav Tolia based the company in San Francisco, California, it has spread to over 4,000 communities nationwide.
The site provides many benefits to its users. The leading benefit obviously is the opportunity to privately and conveniently network with neighbors online. Like Twitter, its users rely primarily on posts to communicate with those they are connected to, and the site allows community members to create groups within the networking community.
Utilizing the Recommendations tab, users can suggest various goods and services in the neighborhood. Home gardening, medical care as well as food and entertainment are all commonly recommended among members. Nextdoor also grants its users the opportunity to post items for sale or for free, post events, post photos, and collectively monitor crime within their neighborhood.
The site is completely free. 39 neighborhoods in Baltimore currently use the site, and over 800 residents in Baltimore are engaged in those 39 online networks!
