Almost half of Maryland’s immigrants are highly skilled! This is great news for Maryland’s economy. An upcoming webinar will discuss what Rhode Island experienced, and it may provide insights as to how we can boost the economy here in Baltimore. The webinar Strengthening Rhode Island: A Case Study in Economic Development through Skilled Immigrants will be led Dr. Manuela Raposo. Dr. Raposo will talk about how Rhode Island has benefited from extending valuable resources to immigrants. She will also discuss how any state can benefit from the skilled labor of immigrants that are stuck in low-level jobs. Dr. Raposo will go through key elements of the success of their project:
- Create a strong Welcome Back Center for internationally trained health professionals
- Make partnerships across government, employers, professional associations, community agencies, and individual job seekers
- Implement reforms to the licensing of nurses
The Rhode Island Welcome Back Center has a strong 5 year track record of success. Rhode Island has figured out a way to go from theory to implementation and Dr. Raposo is willing to share the experience so that our communities may also benefit.
The webinar will be held:
