HUD Struggles Under Dr. Ben Carson’s Leadership

Writing for New York Magazine and ProPublica, Baltimore based journalist Alec MacGillis has published a disturbing account on the state of the Department of Housing and Urban Development under the leadership of Secretary Dr. Ben Carson. Key leadership posts are going unfilled and those that are filled are going to unqualified individuals with a history of right wing political activism. This has left staff frustrated and demoralized.

HUD is already facing pretty severe budget cuts. Leadership that is incompetent and opposed to HUD’s core mission will make things worse at a time when the services provided by the agency are needed more than ever.

It is vital that supporters of affordable and fair housing fight against the dismantling of the agency. CarsonWatch, a partnership between Public Advocates, the Poverty and Race Research Action Council, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, PolicyLink, and the Right To The City Alliance, is working to resist these negative changes and ensure the agency continues to function through these difficult times.
